The crown is the portion of the tooth visible above the gum line. Beneath the surface lies the root structure, anchored securely within the jawbone and surrounded by supporting tissues.

The Root Canal System

Inside each root is a delicate internal chamber known as the root canal system. This space contains the dental pulp — a complex network of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue responsible for tooth development and sensory response.

When Damage Occurs

When the pulp becomes compromised due to deep decay, fracture, trauma, extensive restorative work, or periodontal disease, inflammation or infection can develop within this confined space.

Because the root canal system does not have the capacity to relieve internal pressure, untreated inflammation may progress to significant discomfort or infection affecting the surrounding bone.

Why Treatment Is Necessary

Endodontic therapy is designed to preserve your natural tooth when the internal pulp tissue has been irreversibly damaged.

During treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is carefully removed. The internal canal system is then meticulously cleaned, disinfected, and sealed.

Importantly, only the diseased internal tissue is removed. The structural integrity of the tooth root and its supporting tissues remain intact, allowing the tooth to continue functioning normally once restored by your general dentist.

Timely intervention prevents the spread of infection and helps maintain both oral health and long-term structural stability.
