Endodontic Retreatment

When a Tooth Needs a Second Chance

With proper care, most teeth that receive root canal treatment can last a lifetime. However, in some cases, a previously treated tooth may not heal as expected, or discomfort may return months or even years later. When this happens, endodontic retreatment may be recommended to restore the tooth’s health.

Retreatment allows us to address hidden or new issues that may be preventing complete healing.

Why Retreatment May Be Needed

A tooth may require retreatment for several reasons, including:

  • Complex, curved, or narrow canals that were difficult to fully clean during the initial procedure

  • Undetected or calcified canals

  • Delays in placing a permanent crown or restoration

  • A restoration that did not fully seal the tooth

In other cases, new problems may develop after successful treatment, such as:

  • New decay that exposes the inner tooth structure

  • A cracked, loose, or worn crown or filling

  • Recontamination of the root canal system

Our advanced imaging and diagnostic tools help us identify these issues with precision.

What to Expect During Retreatment

During retreatment, your specialist will carefully reopen the tooth and remove the previous filling material. The canals are then thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and closely examined to identify any remaining infection or structural concerns.

Once the canals are properly treated, they are sealed again, and a temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth.

The procedure is performed using modern microscopic techniques and local anesthesia to ensure accuracy, comfort, and optimal outcomes.

After Your Procedure

Following retreatment, it is important to return to your restorative dentist promptly to receive a permanent crown or restoration. This final step helps protect your tooth and restore full function.

With proper restoration and ongoing oral care, many retreated teeth continue to function comfortably for years to come.
