Endodontic FAQ

Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association focused on treatment of the pulp and surrounding tissues of the tooth. The visible portion of your tooth is the crown; the portion beneath the gum line is the root. Inside the root is a channel — the root canal — containing soft tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. When bacteria enter the pulp due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, fracture, or other causes, the pulp can become severely damaged. An endodontic specialist removes the diseased tissue to save the tooth and prevent further infection. After successful treatment, the tooth continues to function normally.

No. X-rays are a necessary part of endodontic treatment, but we use digital radiography — a computerized system that produces radiation levels up to 90% lower than conventional dental X-ray equipment, which is already considered low dose. Digital images can be optimized, archived, and sent directly to your doctors.

A complete record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office within a few weeks to arrange a follow-up restoration; they will determine the appropriate type. Complications following routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery are uncommon. Should any issue arise, we are available to respond.

Cost varies depending on the severity of damage and which tooth is involved. Endodontic treatment is generally far less expensive than extraction and replacement with an artificial tooth. Please refer to our Financial Policy for details.
