Post-Operative Instructions
Following your treatment, please review the instructions below. If you have any questions during your recovery, we're always here to help.
Root Canal & Retreatment
Eating – OK After 1 Hour
Do not eat for one hour after the procedure to allow the temporary filling to set.
When you do eat, avoid putting force on the tooth. Only chew soft foods on the treated side, and avoid hard or crunchy foods until the tooth has been permanently restored.
Drinking – Immediately Is OK, Cold Only
You can drink room-temperature or cool liquids right away, but be careful if you are still numb.
Do not drink anything hot until the numbness wears off.
Pain Management
Over-the-counter pain medication is recommended (if you are ok taking Ibuprofen and Tylenol).
600 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours, or 400 mg ibuprofen + 1000 mg Tylenol every 6 hours if additional relief is needed.
If you cannot take these medications, contact us for alternatives.
Post-operative pain is usually mild to moderate and subsides within a few days to a week. If you are experiencing significant pain despite taking the recommended combination, please let us know so we can discuss a prescription option.
Chewing on the tooth may cause soreness; continue to be gentle on the treated area.
Antibiotics
If prescribed, take exactly as directed and complete the full course.
Usually prescribed only if swelling occurs in the first 3 days after treatment.
If no swelling is present, you may not need to fill the prescription unless instructed otherwise.
Oral Hygiene
Continue brushing and flossing normally.
In some cases, the temporary filling may interfere slightly with flossing.
Restoration
Within 30 days, see your restorative doctor for the permanent restoration (filling, crown, or other).
We will send a detailed report to your referring doctor, but you need to contact them to schedule.
Do not go longer than one month. The temporary filling will erode; if not replaced, the tooth can become contaminated or infected.
Monitor for Persistent Symptoms
Contact us if you experience severe pain lasting beyond 48–72 hours.
